Assamese Department

The Assamese department of Digboi Mahila Mahavidyalaya is well established, functioning from the time the college was setup. The department offers both Major and General courses. The department organizes educational tours, discussions, lectures by visiting academician from time to time. It also brings out its annual megazine named Rodali and wall megazine named Pratush.

Bengali Department

Bengali or Bangla is the language native to the region of Bengal, which comprises the present-day nation of Bangladesh and of the Indian states West Bengal, Tripura and southern Assam. It is written using the Bengali alphabet. With about 220 million native and about 300 million total speakers, Bengali is one of the most spoken languages, ranked fifth in the world. The National Anthem of Bangladesh, National Anthem of India, National Anthem of Sri Lanka and the national song of India were first composed in the Bengali language.

Economics Department

The Department of Economics was initiated in the year 1981 from the beginning of the college. General courses were started from the beginning of the college. Major courses started in the year 1988 and since then it has been able to produce many brilliant students every year. The department follows the syllabus of Dibrugarh University under which it offers different courses in Economics like Micro Economics, Macro Economics, Public Finance, Development Economics, Statistics for Economics, Mathematics for Economics, Indian Economy etc. The department has well experienced faculties and equipped with a good number of books in the departmental library. We encourage the students to actively participate in the classroom and to present their views. They are also encouraged to attend talks and valuable lectures delivered by reputed speakers in the college as well as in the other institutions. Field studies have been conducted for the students to have some practical knowledge of the economy. Department publishes “Bulletin Board” and one hand written magazine named “Economic Horizon”.

Education Department

The Department of Education offers both Major and General Courses for the Bachelor of Arts as per guidelines of Dibrugarh University. General courses were started from the beginning of the college. Major courses started in the year 1988.We encourage both individual and co-operative learning and hope to foster and ethos of lifelong learning. Due emphasis is given on active learning. In terms of teaching and learning the course units are delivered through lectures, group work, practical, field study, laboratory classes, seminars, group discussion, individual project supervision etc. Considerable attention is given to methods in teaching learning and assessment. Each student is provided regular guidance and support in relevant areas of personal and academic life. It also brings out wall magazine named “Gyanam” by annually. The department is equipped with one library.

Expertise in Hindi Language & Literature can lead you to teaching in schools, colleges, university or private tuitions or even teaching foreign students privately or through consulates. Job Prospects vary from secretarial jobs to executives, public relations as well as for translation & interpreter’s jobs. Translators are employed with industries, publishing houses, research and government organizations such as Ministry of External Affairs and Embassies. Opportunities for translators are also available in the courts of various states. Hindi Officers are posted in every government department and Public Sector organizations as per the policy of Government of India to implement Official Language.

History Department

History as a subject of unending dialogue between past and present investigates past of mankind critically to understand the present. Within the socio-cultural context of North-eastern India and Assam, impartial and critical study of the past becomes even more essential to address the core issues of politics, society, culture, economy and so on. The history syllabus for the undergraduates of the Dibrugarh University, which the Department of History, Digboi Mahila Mahavidyalaya follows, therefore addresses the history of politics, society, culture, gender, economy and environment of India in general and Assam in particular. The Department of History of Digboi Mahila Mahavidyalaya, established in 1989, since its inception has been imparting undergraduate courses within this academic curriculum of the University. In the Higher Secondary level, the Department follows guidelines and curriculum of (NCERT) Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). The Department offers History as a subject to the following courses:
1. The Department offers History as a subject in Higher Secondary level
2. The Department offers History as a subject to the undergraduate students.
3. In addition the faculties of the Department teach Tourism and Travel Management which is a part of
Skill Based Courses (SKB) and conduct field study and Project-cum-Viva external examination of to the SKB students of Fifth Sixth Semester.
4. The faculties also take classes of History section of Multi Disciplinary Course of the Fourth
Semester undergraduate students.
Over and above, the Department have a plan to open Major course in future for the undergraduate level. It is noteworthy that the Major course was started in 1996 though it had to discontinue the course from 2009 due to lack of faculty members.

Home Science Department

Home Science, or the science of a home, includes all the things that concern the person, home, family members and resources. It is the education for “better living” and the core of this education is the family ecosystem. It also deals with reciprocal relations between the family and its natural and man made environments. It aims at getting maximum satisfaction for the person and their family members through the efficient and scientific use of your resources. It gives the person all the knowledge of the scientific procedures involved in making a home beautiful.

As a field in education it has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a domestic skill oriented courses offering inputs in housekeeping, home decoration, cookery, child rearing, stitching etc. Such an education was appropriate in the past since it helped to draw women out of their homes to improve the skills that had been handed down to them by the elderly women in the family.

Philosophy Department

The department of Philosophy was established in 1981, and has been a core component of the college right from the very beginning. The department initially offered general courses to its students and started offering Major Degree courses only from 1995.

The department follows the course syllabus as determined by Dibrugarh University. The courses of Philosophy includes classical, modern and contemporary schools of thought of both Indian and Western philosophers. The course also covers the concepts of ethics in life, and the idea of different religions. One paper of psychology is included within the course. The department publishes an annual wall magazine or ‘Prachir Pratrika’ Darshan on the 5th of September, on the occassion of Teacher’s Day. The department regularly organises educational tours and excursions to various places across the state for the benefit of its students.

Political Science Department

The department of Political Sciences offers both Major and General courses for the Bachelor of Arts programme. The department. under the banner of Political Science Association organizes educational tours and discussions, and conducts political studies from time to time. It also brings out its bulletin board named “Bohnimaan” biannually. The department is equiped with one library which containss about 200 books, and is looked after by the students themselves. The library is well equipped with modern audio-visual teaching aids like projector, computer etc.

Sociology Department

Sociology Department offers both Major and General Course. General Course introduced in the year 1981 and Major course in the year 1993. This Department organizes Field Study, Group Discussion, Workshop, Faculty Exchange Programme and Awareness Programme from time to time. Field Study is compulsory for all Major Students as a part of Major Syllabus of Dibrugarh University. The purposes of field study are, a) to collect information about the socio-economic life of tribes b) to develop students’ knowledge and efficiency in research field. This Department has own library with more than 150 books. This Department publishes annually a wall magazine on the 5th September on the occasion of Teachers’’ Day.
